There are times you may find that you are struggling to sleep. This could be owing to several reasons, including stress. Fortunately, there are simple solutions to sleep problems, and one of them is using essential oils.
If you have a diffuser, you can create simple essential oil blends to help you sleep faster and more soundly. Other ways you can use essential oils to help you sleep include rubbing the oils on your chest, forehead, hands, and feet. Or use aromatherapy candles infused in essential oils. Or mix your favorite essential oils with water and spray on your pillow.
But keep in mind that not all essential oils will help you sleep, so it’s good to identify those that can. Some great essential oils that will help you sleep include lavender oil, chamomile oil, Bergamot oil, Sweet Marjoram Oil, Ylang Ylang Oil, Peppermint oil, and Clary Sage oil.

How to use essential oils properly

- Before you use essential oils, make sure that you read the labels and the instructions.
- If you use excessive amounts of essential oils in your diffuser, you may experience coughing, headaches, nausea, migraines, dizziness, and even vomiting. Therefore, use only the recommended amounts written on the product’s label.
- If you are going to apply the oils to parts of your body, do a patch test first to see if you are allergic to the oils or not. This should help you identify which oils are safe for you to use and which are not.
- Don’t use essential oils on babies because they have sensitive skin. But you can use the oils on children who are over two years of age if you find that your child is struggling to sleep.
- Don’t use undiluted essential oils on sensitive skin to avoid irritation.
- If your eyes become exposed to essential oils causing irritation, rinse them with cold water for about 15 minutes. If the irritation does not go away, see a doctor immediately.
- Always dilute essential oils with a carrier oil like coconut oil to help the essential oils spread more easily.
- If you are pregnant and you would like to use essential oils to help you sleep, first consult with your doctor since not all oils should be used during pregnancy.
Final Remarks
Good quality sleep is important to our mental and physical health. It can also improve the quality of your life. If you find that you are having trouble sleeping or the quality of your sleep is bad, use essential oils together with other relaxing techniques to help you sleep better.
